Around 3 a.m., officers returning to the station noticed the man sitting in his vehicle just outside the parking lot gate.

As they approached the vehicle on foot, they saw that the man was armed with a shotgun. The officers quickly took cover as a shot rang out.

Believing they were under fire, an officer shot at the vehicle.

Moments later, officers found the man dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, authorities said.
