Officer-Involved Shooting In San Jose Leaves One Dead

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- One person was killed in an officer-involved shooting in a San Jose neighborhood on Monday evening, according to the San Jose Police Department.

The incident happened near the intersection of 3rd and Martha streets, just south of Interstate 280, where police were apparently responding to a 6:15 p.m. call regarding a person being stabbed.

San Jose police said the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene and that the involved officer was not injured.

So far, police are not saying exactly what led those officers to open fire. The suspect is dead and two other people have life-threatening stab wounds.

Witnesses said the confrontation with police happened quickly.

"All I could hear is, you know, 'Drop the knife! Drop the knife! I'm warning you, drop the knife!' said witness David Leaf. "As I'm thinking, 'Is this guy really gonna shoot?' next thing I know: 'Bam! Bam! Bam! Bam!' Like six shots in quick succession."

People who live in the area told KPIX 5 their neighborhood has seen a spike in crime.

This is San Jose's first police shooting of 2016.

Police said additional details would be provided after the preliminary investigation was completed.

The identity of the deceased person and the details surrounding their death have not yet been released.
