Parents Killed, Kids Survive Horrific Crash On Highway 4

DISCOVERY BAY (CBS SF) – Two people were killed and three young children were hospitalized resulting from a crash on Highway 4 near Discovery Bay late Sunday night.

According to authorities, the crash took place around 11:30 p.m. when a Chevrolet S-10 pickup headed westbound crossed into the eastbound lane and struck Chrysler Town & Country minivan carrying three adults and three children.

The Town & Country ended up in the water, and dive teams were dispatched to rescue the people inside.

"All of the children are fine, suffered minor injuries," said Officer James Claire of the California Highway Patrol. "One of the adults was extricated, it appears he suffered minor injuries. But there were two individuals, a male and a female, that didn't survive."

Authorities said the two people killed in the crash were the parents of the three children. The surviving adult and the children were taken to Sutter Hospital in Tracy. The children, two boys and a girl, are age 10, 9 and 2.

The driver of the S-10 survived the crash and was also taken to a hospital.

Authorities said speed may have played a factor in the crash, but the crash remains under investigation.

"Quite honestly, they need to slow down. This roadway is straight but it's dark out here. It's only two lanes. They just need to slow down," Claire said.
