Lanes Reopen After Fatal Motorcyclist Crash On I-680
WALNUT CREEK (CBS SF) -- Lanes on Interstate Highway 680 in Walnut Creek have been reopened Tuesday afternoon after a fatal crash in which a motorcyclist was thrown from one side of highway to the other, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash was initially reported along Highway 680 near the North Main Street off-ramp at 12:41 p.m., CHP Officer John Fransen said.
A motorcycle and a vehicle were involved in a collision on the highway's northbound side, Contra Costa County Fire Protection District Fire Inspector Steve Aubert said.
The motorcyclist was ejected during the collision and landed on the highway's southbound lanes, Aubert said.
Medical personnel provided aid to the motorcyclist, who was taken to John Muir Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries, Aubert said.
CHP officials have confirmed that the incident resulted in a death, believed to be that of the motorcyclist, whose identity was not provided.
A man in a vehicle not involved in the initial crash was also extricated at the scene and was taken to a hospital with moderate injuries, Aubert said.
Debris from the crash blocked lanes on both sides of the highway, according to the CHP. All of the lanes were cleared and reopened around 3 p.m., but the Lafayette Police Department reported soon afterward that the highway and nearby surface streets remained "very congested."
Additional details on the incident were not immediately available.
