Pedestrian Killed In South Bay Freeway Ramp Collision Identified

CAMPBELL (CBS SF) -- A pedestrian killed in a collision with two cars on a freeway ramp near Campbell early Monday morning has been identified as 31-year-old Jennifer Pigue, according to the Santa Clara County medical examiner's office.

Pigue was on the connector ramp from northbound state Highway 85 to northbound state Highway 17, where officers responded to a report of a collision between a pedestrian and car around 5:10 a.m., CHP Officer Ross Lee said.

Before the collision, officers received reports of a woman walking on northbound Highway 85 with a backpack and flashlight, Lee said.

A 44-year-old San Jose woman driving a black 2011 Audi Q5 on the ramp traveling around 70 mph saw Pigue and swerved to the left, but was unable to avoid a collision with the pedestrian, Lee said.

A 48-year-old Morgan Hill man traveling in a 2006 Lexus GS300 from behind saw the collision and initially believed the pedestrian was debris on the road, according to Lee.

The man, driving at 65 mph, then realized Pigue was on the ground and was unable to steer away from her, Lee said.

Both drivers pulled to the right shoulder and called 911, according to Lee.

They waited until officers arrived and were not arrested, he said.

Officers conducted an investigation into the collision that led to a three-hour closure on the ramp, which is in an area bordering San Jose, Campbell and Los Gatos.
