Gridlock: Planners Look To Ease Traffic Along East Bay's I-80 Corridor

KCBS_740 PINOLE (KCBS) -- Anyone who drives through the I-80 corridor in West Contra Costa County knows that it's congested, and planners are looking at new ways to ease the gridlock.

"The I-80 corridor is the most congested corridor in the Bay Area, between State Route 4 and The Maze," John Nemeth, Executive Director at the West Contra Costa Transportation Advisory Committee said.

Nemeth said there are no plans to add extra lanes to existing freeways, but a number of transit options are being considered, including everything from expanded rapid bus service, to a new BART expansion to Hercules.

BART Board Member Zakhary Mallett told KCBS that the region is one of the most underserved in the Bay Area.

"It's the only place BART hasn't been extended. It is the corridor with the highest number of low income populations," Mallett said.

No matter what's decided, it will take years to implement a fix.

Two more public meeting are scheduled for Wednesday night in Pinole City Hall, and Thursday night in Richmond City Hall.
