1 Dead, 1 Injured In South San Francisco Shooting

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- Police are searching for a suspect in a shooting that left one person dead and another injured Monday afternoon in South San Francisco.

Christian Omar Cruz, a 19-year-old resident of South San Francisco, is considered armed and dangerous, according to police.

Anyone with information about Cruz's whereabouts is asked to call 911.

The shooting occurred near Orange Memorial Park, located at West Orange Avenue and North Canal Street, according to a police dispatcher.

Witnesses told KPIX 5 the incident started as an altercation that escalated to violence in the park.

Police said the shooting happened at around 3 p.m. with an argument between a number of men as they walked through the neighborhood before shooting erupted near the park's recreation center.

One gunman ran from the scene. Police described the suspect as a Hispanic male, approximately five feet seven inches tall and weighing about 150 pounds. He was last seen wearing a blue windbreaker with a yellow stripe down the arm.

The suspect was last seen fleeing west through the park on foot, carrying a handgun, police said.

"Upon arrival, officers found two adult victims," said South San Francisco Police Sgt. Ken Chetcuti. "Both had sustained single gunshot wounds."

Both victims were transported to San Francisco General Hospital, where one was pronounced dead. The other is in stable condition, according to police.

South San Francisco High School and Los Cerritos Elementary School were briefly placed on what the district described as "Secure Campus status" Monday afternoon. The status meant that doors were locked and entering and exiting campus was temporarily restricted, but students and staff were not under a full lockdown protocol because there was no perceived threat to the two schools.

No students or staff were in any danger during the incident and students exited safely from campus when the secure campus status was lifted.

One witness told KPIX 5 he heard three shots fired.

The motive for the fatal shooting is not yet known, police said.
