Arrest Made In 1984 Child Abduction-Murder That Shocked Fairfield

FAIRFIELD (CBS SF) -- A convicted serial child molester currently serving time in state prison has been charged with the 1984 abduction-murder of a 3-year-old Fairfield boy -- a crime that sent shock waves to the very core of a Bay Area community, authorities announced Tuesday.

Fairfield police said Michael Anthony Blas Fejarang has been charged with first degree murder with special circumstances and kidnapping for ransom in the death of 3-year-old Clark Toshiro Handa.

The Fairfield boy was abducted from his bedroom in the family home sometime during the evening of August 22, 1984.

A ransom note demanding money for Clark's safe return was discovered, but the family never received any further communication from the kidnappers and Clark never returned home.

The case went cold after several years, but was never been closed.

Eventually, evidence was developed with the help of the Federal Bureau of Investigation that led investigators to Fejarang, who was serving a 26-year prison sentence related to separate child molestation cases from Solano County in 1981, 2001, and 2002.

At the time of the crime, Fejarang was a 23-year-old Fairfield resident and a family friend of the Handa's.

Fejarang is currently housed at Valley State Prison in Chowchilla. The Solano County District Attorney's Office will work with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation to transfer Fejarang to Solano County for trial.

Fairfield police said the evidence "led to the identification of the individuals responsible for the abduction and subsequent homicide of Clark."

There is no word on further arrests or suspects, but detectives said the " case remains an active investigation."
