Richmond Teen Drowns In Lake Berryessa

LAKE BERRYESSA (CBS SF) -- A 15-year-old Richmond boy drowned in Lake Berryessa on Sunday afternoon, a Napa County sheriff's captain said Tuesday.

Jose Sartunino-Garcia was on an outing with his family and friends at the Oak Shores day picnic area when he went swimming in a cove at Foxtail Flat, sheriff's Capt. Steve Blower said.

The boy's family told responding deputies that he swam well and showed no sign of distress in the water before he disappeared and didn't resurface around 4:30 p.m., Blower said.

The family could see the boy's body in about 10 feet of water in the middle of the 30-foot wide cove, according to Blower.

The first deputy to arrive, a member of the sheriff's office's dive team, retrieved the boy's body about 15 minutes after he had disappeared. Cal Fire personnel tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate the boy, Blower said.

It was the first drowning at the lake this year, he said.

Blower said swimmers often do not realize how tired they are while swimming after a daylong outing and they panic and swallow water, causing their airway to close, Blower said.
