Muni Driver Could Be Fired Over Racist Rant Caught On Camera
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – A San Francisco Muni driver could lose his job after a woman recorded him using racial slurs in a rant caught on video Monday.
The confrontation between the transit driver and the woman started over a parking spot near the Muni yard at Beach and Powell in the city's North Beach neighborhood.
In the video, the Muni driver verbally assaulted the woman for more than a minute and used racial slurs, even as she tried to explain her side of the story. As the woman tried to walk away, the driver kept on shouting at her.
After the incident, the woman posted the video on Facebook.
"The actions were reprehensible," SFMTA spokesperson Paul Rose told KPIX 5. "We are taking immediate and corrective action in this case. This is behavior that is not representative of our overall workforce."
An internal SFMTA memo obtained by KPIX 5 said they are recommending that the bus driver be fired.
"The union doesn't condone the driver's actions," said Eric Williams, a representative from TWU Local 250-A. "Being an African American man, I am personally offended."
SFMTA said the driver has been behind the wheel of the 28 line, which runs from the Excelsior District to the Golden Gate Bridge, for the past two years.
