Kite Surfers Have Close Encounter With Pair Of Whales In SF Bay
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- A couple of lucky kite surfers had a once in a lifetime Thursday afternoon when a pair of whales surfaced only yards away on San Francisco Bay.
Chopper 5 was looking for the whales after new reports emerged of a pair of sea mammals swimming through they bay when the camera caught the whales surfacing near the two kite surfers.
Marine biologists say humpback whales have been swimming into the bay in unprecedented numbers during the past two weeks.
The behavior could be caused by an unusual concentration of anchovies near shore.
For the second time this week, Chopper 5 was able to get footage of a pair of whales.
This time, our cameras were able to capture several minutes of the massive sea mammals as they swam through the bay.
The whales were also seen coming up for air near the Golden Gate Bridge. Surprisingly, the whales even timed one of their appearances live during the KPIX News at 5.
It is possible that this is same pair of whales that was spotted on Tuesday, but so far no marine biologists have been able determine that for a fact.
