San Jose Police Recruiting For Officers In Hawaii

SAN JOSE (KPIX 5) – Looking to fill its ranks, police in San Jose have gone to the Hawaiian Islands with the hope to find some new recruits.

A team of recruiters are in Hawaii this week, holding job fairs and testing potential applicants. Pay starts at more than $84,000 a year, about $25,000 more than police in Honolulu.

The department is targeting Hawaii because recruits might not get sticker shock when they see San Jose rents and home prices. Like the Bay Area, Honolulu is among the most expensive real estate markets in the country.

"This is the first time we brought the testing here," said Sgt. Heater Randol of the San Jose Police Department. "We know it's not easy for applicants to fly back and forth to do the testing, so we're bringing it out here and bringing it to them."

Hawaii is also home to a lot of military members who can now use their service to satisfy some of San Jose's college requirements.

After four days of recruiting in Hawaii, San Jose police have about 60 applicants. Following additional tests, the department hopes to have 30 recruits for an academy starting in October.
