Secret Service Officer Shoots Armed Man Outside White House

WASHINGTON, D.C. (CBS SF) -- A shooting just outside the White House triggered a lockdown of the building Friday, which has since been lifted.

A U.S. Secret Service uniformed officer shot a male suspect at about 3:15 p.m. outside the White House gates, according to CBS News. The suspect was still alive and talking but has critical injuries.

Associated Press reported the person approached the Secret Service officer and drew a weapon, and then the officer opened fire.

The shooting was reported on West Executive Drive just outside the White House west wing. U.S. Secret Service and D.C. police closed 17th Street between Pennsylvania and Constitution Avenues following the shooting.

A gun has been recovered, according to CBS News.

President Obama was not at the White House at the time of the shooting, he was golfing at Joint Base Andrews. Vice President Joe Biden was inside the White House complex at the time of the shooting and was secured during the lockdown, according to his office.
