Best Places For Tap Dancing Lessons In San Francisco

There's something about the rhythmic sound of tap shoes creating percussion as they collide with the floor that is appealing to all age levels. Whether you are a fan of Fred Astaire, Savion Glover or Happy Feet, tap isn't something exclusive to the top tier of performers. Part of the appeal of tap is the improvisation possibilities. To get to that point, you have to know the basics. Here are some of the best places for tap dancing lessons in San Francisco.

Tap intermediate- Wednesdays at 9 p.m.

City Dance Studios offers a variety of dance classes from jazz to hip hop. The studio has high ceilings, floor length mirrors and is located in the SOMA district of San Francisco. The schedule varies from individual classes to workshops. Tap is instructed by Sam Weber, who is internationally known as a choreographer, tap dance artist and teacher.

Lynn Douthit School of Dance offers combination classes for kids through teens that include tap as well as adult tap classes. The dance school has been teaching dance for over 30 years and is located in the Balboa Terrace neighborhood of San Francisco. It specializes in tap being for all ages and levels. There is also an annual performance for all students.

Royce Gallery has a dedicated tap dance room for all levels of tap, and tap shoes are available to use. It offers loose ankle tap classes, super shuffle workshops and midi-tap for all in the Mission district of San Francisco. Entry to class is free and required to attend future classes. Classes are purposely small and require an advanced reservation.

Geary Dance Center offers tap classes for those with no prior dance experience to intermediate and advanced. Steps are repeated and then added upon to maximize memory of the tap moves. It is located in the Richmond District of San Francisco and offers classes from ages 2 to 102. The dance school makes the tap classes fun for adults and kids alike.

ODC School and Rhythm and Motion Dance Program offers ten-week workshops for beginning and intermediate students with drop-ins allowed for the first two weeks. Renowned tap dance artist Sam Weber teaches everything from shuffles to hop brush step in level one and crossing shuffles to waltz clog in level two. Individual tap classes at different levels are offered on a weekly basis and cover not just fundamental techniques but structured improvisation, how to work in groups or independently and how to tap with and without music. The studio is located in the Mission district of San Francisco and street parking is available.
