California's Shark Fin Ban Upheld By U.S. Supreme Court
SACRAMENTO (KCBS) -- The U.S. Supreme Court has sided with California and rejected an appeal of the state's ban on shark fins.
A group of Bay Area Chinese Americans argued that California was exceeding its authority and interfering in the commercial fishing market.
Federal law already prohibits "finning" -- that's where they cut off the sharks' fins and then throw the shark back into the water to die. But California went a step further in 20-13 by banning the possession or sale of shark fins.
