Sweet Piece Of Bay Area History For Sale As Former Ghirardelli Mansion Hits Market

PIEDMONT (CBS SF) -- Chocolate lovers can own piece of the Bay Area's delicious past. The Piedmont mansion of chocolatier Gieseppe "Joseph" Ghirardelli is on the market.

Son of the Italian-born patriarch of the Ghirardelli chocolate empire, Domingo Ghirardelli Jr, Joseph died before he could actually live in this 6,479 square foot estate. Instead, it would be home to his widow Ellen and her new husband Thomas Cushing. Together they remodeled the then-dated Mission Revival manse into its 'modern' Colonial Revival Style.

The home boasts 7 bedrooms, 5.5 baths and has a separate guest house over the garage. Outside there are lush gardens and a mature rose garden; inside a pallet of chocolate-colored wood-paneled rooms adorned with elegant period details like box beam ceilings and with beautifully carved cabinetry.

The home is listed at  $5,298,000.

Highland Partners broker and listing agent Debbi DiMaggio says the Ghirardelli mansion will be open to the public, Sunday June 5.
