Police Gather To Show Support For Injured Fremont Officers

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- Police officers and fire fighters from various Bay Area agencies were holding vigil at San Jose Regional Medical Thursday, hopeful that the Fremont officer critically injured in Wednesdays shooting would recover.

KPIX 5 was told by one paramedic at the hospital that, when it comes to law enforcement -- it's a close community. There has been a large outpouring of support for the injured officers and their families.

The two policemen were shot by a suspect during a confrontation in Fremont that ended with a fiery standoff at a home the suspect broke into Wednesday morning.

In addition to several Fremont police officers, members of Danville, San Jose and East Palo Alto police departments have come by, some bearing food for family members and flowers.

In the latest update by Fremont police, officials said the first officer shot was still in critical condition.

"We're not discussing specific information about the officers for security reasons, but I'll just tell you they're both exemplary officers," said Fremont police Chief
Richard Lucero.

Sources close to the investigation tell KPIX 5 the first officer was shot in the head, but the bullet did not enter his brain but did cause some arterial damage to his head.

The other, a detective with 10 years of experience shot about 10 minutes later, is in stable condition and recovering.

Authorities have also confirmed the first officer shot is new to the force and has only been on the job for a year.

Lucero clarified Wednesday that the second officer had only been shot once after police earlier reported that he was shot twice.
