Bay Area Buses Losing Riders Despite Packed Freeways, BART Trains

KCBS_740 SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- BART trains and ferries are full, but recent figures show that bus ridership in the Bay Area is down.

The Metropolitan Transportation Commission reports that between 1991 and 2014, ridership declined by 15 percent.

One AC Transit line in Fremont saw a 70 percent decline in ridership between 2010 and 2015.

But, buses in downtown Oakland appear to be bucking the trend.

"This bus is pretty full, but I'm totally dependent. I don't have a car," one rider at a stop on 14th and Broadway in Oakland told KCBS.

Lower gas prices could have something to do with the ridership drop, but in several parts of the Bay Area, bus lines have been cut.
