Where Hillary, Bernie Won In California

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton won Tuesday's primary in California by racking up large majorities in the state's most populous regions, including the Bay Area. Meanwhile, much of Bernie Sanders majorities were in lesser populated areas of the state.

Sanders, who trailed Clinton by more than 50 percentage points in California a year ago, made the Golden State crucial in the race for the Democratic nomination after winning primaries and caucuses in 20 states. Recent polls showed a tightening race between the two candidates, and both Clinton and Sanders campaigned vigorously throughout California in recent weeks.

The California Secretary of State's Office reported Wednesday morning that Clinton had 1,940,580 votes, while Sanders had 1,502,043, a margin of 55.8 percent to 43.2 percent.

Sanders did particularly well among Democratic primary voters in Northern California and the Sierra, including Lake, Mendocino and Shasta Counties.

The senator's biggest margin of victory in California was in Humboldt County, where Sanders received 68 percent of the vote.

The former Secretary of State was declared the presumptive Democratic nominee ahead of Tuesday's election, after receiving enough commitments from superdelegates. With Tuesday's vote, Clinton reached a majority of pledged delegates won in primaries and caucuses.
