9-Year-Old Boy Becomes Youngest To Swim To Alcatraz And Back

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- A nine-year-old boy from Merced County made history Tuesday morning, becoming the youngest person to swim from San Francisco to Alcatraz and back.

James savage braved strong currents and the chilly bay water to complete the roughly three mile swim.

His mom was by his side in a kayak. The coast guard was also watching carefully.

James had been training for weeks to accomplish this goal.

"I've been practicing at the detention dam. I've been going there to practice," said James.

The boy finished the round-trip swim to Alcatraz in about two-and-a-half hours.
