Hayward Police Chief Competing In CrossFit Games In Memory Of Fallen Officer

(KPIX 5) -- When she is working out, Diane Stuart means business - and for the Hayward police chief and CrossFit masters athlete, it's unfinished business.

The 52-year-old has qualified once again for the CrossFit Games, and this time she's hoping nothing will cut that short.

"Last year between day one and day two, one of my best - Scott Lunger - was killed in the line of duty and I came home," said Stuart.

She was in Carson competing at the time Sgt. Lunger was slain during a traffic stop. But when the shooting happened, she dropped everything and came home immediately.

"All I could really think about was what my team was going through," said Stuart. "My department, his family. and there was not even a fleeting thought about staying to finish."

Now, one year later, she has qualified for the CrossFit Games again. She's spent 25-30 hours a week in the gym getting ready, and this time she's not just ready to finish - she's ready to win.

"Scotts one-year anniversary is during the games," said Stuart. "I have a lot of things I want to prove and I want to walk away from this not leaving anything on the floor."

The CrossFit Games begin Tuesday and run through Sunday.
