Driver Arrested For Alleged Street Racing In Santa Cruz Mountains

LOS GATOS (CBS SF) – A 20-year-old San Jose man suspected of street racing off of state Highway 35 southwest of Los Gatos was arrested Thursday night, California Highway Patrol officials said.

Austin James Paul was arrested on suspicion of illegal street racing in a Nissan 240SX, CHP officials said.

Officers responded to a report of cars speeding and doing donuts around 10 p.m. in the area of state Highway 35 and Black Road, according to the CHP.

The vehicles were reportedly continuing to state Highway 9 and arriving officers found them in a day use area within Santa Cruz County limits just south of Highway 35, CHP officials said.

The officers saw a driver, later identified as Paul, speeding and steering the Nissan in circles, according to the CHP.

The vehicle's tires were smoking and broke traction, CHP officials said.

Paul was arrested and the Nissan was impounded for 30 days, according to the CHP.

The drivers of two other cars in the area watching the Nissan were cited for aiding or abetting a car in a speed contest and released, according to the CHP.
