Mountain Lion Spotted In San Mateo Neighborhood
SAN MATEO (CBS SF) – Police are asking San Mateo residents to be vigilant after a person saw a mountain lion Sunday evening, police said.
Officers responded just before 8 p.m. to West 20th Avenue and La Salle Drive where they set up a perimeter to find the cat.
Officers asked residents to shelter in place while officers searched the area for about an hour without locating the lion, according to police.
Officers notified the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and will frequently check the area for the mountain lion or other mountain lions, police said.
In an email, the department released several several safety tips.
•Do not feed deer. It is illegal in California and it will attract mountain lions.
•If you see a mountain lion DO NOT APPROACH IT, especially one that is feeding or with offspring. Most mountain lions will try to avoid confrontation.
•Avoid hiking or jogging through wooded areas when mountain lions are most active—dawn, dusk, or at night.
•Keep a close watch on small children when hiking or traveling in or about wooded areas.
•If you encounter a mountain lion, do not run; instead, face the animal, make noise and try to look bigger by waving your arms; throw rocks or other objects. Pick up small children.
