2 Arrested In Shooting, Standoff At Suspected Gambling Den In Oakland

OAKLAND (CBS SF) – Two people have been arrested following a shooting and standoff Wednesday morning at a warehouse believed to house an illegal gambling operation.

Police responded to the scene after shots were reported around 3 a.m. at the warehouse located near East 12th Street and 15th Avenue. SWAT officers were called to the scene and the building cordoned off.

Before dawn, a number of people emerged from the building with their hands up. Police told KCBS they had been questioned and released.

"About 12 people did exit the building during this investigation," said Oakland Police Officer Marco Marquez. "Whether they're witnesses or victims, we're going to investigate them as well."

Officers got into a standoff with at least one suspect. The standoff lasted for almost 6 hours. Officers and the SWAT team were joined by hostage negotiators on scene as they tried to figure out exactly what they were dealing with inside the warehouse.

Just before 9:30 a.m., police said a suspect was taken into custody. Shortly before 10 a.m., they said a second suspect had been arrested and investigators had recovered a shotgun and a replica handgun inside the warehouse.

So far, there has been no word on the charges the two people who were arrested may be facing.

The shooting victim was treated at an area hospital and released and released.

A person at the scene told KPIX 5 that there was an illegal slot machine operation in the building, but authorities had not disclosed any information about illegal gambling.
