Two-Alarm Fire Damages San Jose Supermarket

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) – A two-alarm fire ignited in the kitchen at the rear of a San Jose supermarket early Tuesday, sending 10 people scrambling for safety and heavily damaging the building, fire officials said.

San Jose Fire Capt. Mitch Matlow said the blaze was reported at 7:40 a.m. in 300 block of King Road.

"When we arrived, we had smoke coming out of the front and the rear of the building," he told reporters. "The first started in the kitchen on or near the stove."

A second alarm was called in to bring extra units to the scene in an effort to prevent the blaze from spreading from the Lucky 7 Supermarket to other businesses in the strip mall.

Matlow said 10 people were in the store at the time of the blaze and all escaped without injury.

The store was heavily damaged, but Matlow said the other businesses in the strip mall should be able to open for the day.
