SF State Senate Candidates To Face Off In Pokémon Go Challenge

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- The Pokémon Go craze takes a political turn in San Francisco this weekend when rival state senator candidates Jane Kim and Scott Weiner face off in a Poké-battle for charity.

Kim and Wiener, who are battling for the District 11 State Senate seat, will meet at the 24th Street BART Station on Saturday at 4 p.m. to engage in a head-to-head battle.

The challenge? To find and capture as many Pokémon as possible on the streets of San Francisco.

To even the playing field, the two candidates will both start off with new accounts. While they will be able to pick up Poké Balls throughout game play from Pokéstops, no in-app purchases will be permitted.

Kim and Weiner will also have teammates to help them.

"We each get three teammates and we'll see who can catch the most Pokémon," said Weiner.

The teams will be awarded 2 points for every unique Pokémon and 1 point for any duplicate Pokémon. San Francisco Examiner columnist Joe Fitzgerald Rodriguez will serve as impartial judge to verify the new accounts and count up Pokémon at the end of the challenge.

The loser of the challenge will donate $500 to the winner's charity of choice. Kim will be playing for At The Crossroads, a group dedicated to helping homeless youth, while Wiener will be playing for Project Open Hand, which provides meals for low income elderly and seriously ill people.
