All Clear Given At Fremont Hazmat Incident
FREMONT (CBS SF) -- The all-clear has been given for Fremont residents following a shelter-in-place advisor Friday morning after a chemical reaction started in the back of a garbage truck during a trash pickup, fire officials said.
The reaction started in a Republic garbage truck after a trash pickup at 34309 Newton Court at about 9:30 a.m., police and fire officials said.
After picking up garbage on the driver's regular route and compacting the load, the reaction started in the back of the truck, sending toxic fumes into the air, fire Division Chief Diane Hendry said.
The truck driver was having difficulty breathing and was taken to a hospital. The fire department is asking residents of surrounding streets to stay in their homes with the windows closed, Hendry said.
A hazardous materials team responded to clean up the spill and determine what chemicals were in the truck.
Police had estimated the spill would take about two hours to clean up, but the all clear was given at 10:36 a.m.
