Convicted Hayward Man Lured Mother Of His Child, Attacked, Shot Her In Face

HAYWARD (CBS SF) -- A 43-year-old Hayward man was sentenced Monday to 150 years to life in state prison for brutally attacking and trying to kill his ex-girlfriend in two incidents three years ago that nearly claimed her life and left her partially paralyzed.

Shandon Stanley was convicted in June of premeditated attempted murder, mayhem, being a felon in possession of a firearm, domestic violence, kidnapping, assault with a firearm and making criminal threats for the incidents in October 2013.

Prosecutor Allyson Donovan said the victim, who's now 31, lost 25 percent of her brain and skull and her right eye and a doctor testified she "defied all the odds" by surviving.

Donovan said the victim displayed "courage and the fight to live" by surviving and testifying against Stanley and thinks the reason she fought so hard to stay alive is that she wanted to continue to raise her two children.

Donovan said that in October 2013, the woman, who worked as a prostitute and lived in Hayward, was trying to end her relationship with Stanley, who was the father of one of her children and, at times, her exploiter.

The woman was working in San Jose on Oct. 18, 2013, and Stanley called her 115 times that night looking for her. He ultimately found her car and hid by it waiting for her to return, according to Donovan.

When the woman was leaving, Stanley came running toward her with a handgun, got into her car, struck her in her face with the gun and demanded that she drive him, Donovan said.

The victim, who was scared, then drove at Stanley's demand to San Francisco, where he raped her and threatened to kill her and himself, according to Donovan.

However, he didn't do so and eventually drove the woman back to her home in Hayward, she said.

About two weeks later, on Oct. 31, 2013, the victim posted an online advertisement on a dating website and Stanley convinced a friend, who didn't know Stanley was armed with a loaded gun, to call her and lure her outside so that he could talk to her, Donovan said.

Stanley laid in wait in nearby bushes for the woman to leave her apartment for the "date" with the friend, but when she left her residence Stanley jumped out of the bushes with a gun and tried to push her into a car, according to Donovan.

The woman was able to escape Stanley's grasp, but he followed her and shot her three times -- once in the face, and twice in her left arm. The woman survived the shooting but she's paralyzed on her left side and has to use a wheelchair, has plates in her head and needs full-time care, according to Donovan.

One reason Stanley received such a long sentence is that he has two prior strike convictions for domestic violence incidents involving two other victims, one for forcible oral copulation on a minor and one for assault with great bodily injury, Donovan said.

Although some of the incidents occurred in San Jose and San Francisco, Stanley's case was prosecuted in Alameda County because that's where the most serious crimes occurred.

Donovan said Stanley's actions were "cold-blooded and calculated" and said his trial was "one of the most tragic cases I've prosecuted."
