Popular Football Helmet Brand Used By Bay Area Schools Issues Recall

SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX 5) -- Some Bay Area high school football teams are going to need new gear on the gridiron this fall because of a safety recall involving a popular brand of helmets.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a recall for several Xenith models that can crack, putting a player at risk for a head injury.

The recalled models are the Xenith Epic Varsity, X2 Varsity, and X2E Varsity and Youth. They were manufactured or factory reconditioned between May 2015 and March 2016.

It's especially troubling to note that in their most recent guidelines, the Virginia Tech Helmet Ratings listed these Xenith models as earning five out of five stars.

When KPIX 5 researched youth football helmets in 2014, we discovered several Bay Area schools using Xenith helmets.
