Surveillance Camera Catches Robberies At Same Address In Oakland
OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- Lightning may not strike twice in the same place, but apparently robbers do.
An attempted robbery was caught on camera in the East Bay and 2 suspects have been detained.
That same camera was rolling when robbers showed up in the same place last year.
The latest robbery happened Saturday, on the corner of California and Maple streets in Oakland's Laurel District.
The suspect car drove past the home where a woman parking her Mercedes SUV. Two men jumped out of the back seat and tried to rob her. When they realized the doors were locked, the driver sped off nearly crashing into another parked car.
Surveillance video led police to the suspects. Police are still looking for the third.
Nelson Luesse lives next door. His camera caught both attacks.
"She was pretty terrified, she was very shaken up by it all," said Luesse. "She had her daughter who is 2-year-old, a toddler in a carseat in the back seat."
Last year, the same family was parking their SUV in front of the house when 2 different men snatched the 82-year-old grandmother's purse. She chased them but they dragged and threw the elderly woman to the ground.
Oakland police say these are two different groups of thieves. Neighbors say the suspects from last year are in jail.
The men in this latest incident were linked to 3 separate attempted robberies -- all on Saturday, all in the same area. They used the same method each time.
Thanks to the video, detectives were able to track down the car and found the 2 suspects.
"Stay out of Oakland if you're going to rob people," said Luesse. "We're not going to put up with it anymore."
Oakland police warn drivers to be extremely alert when they park. Robbers are casing people who are either parking their cars or getting out of their cars. They're also targeting high-end cars.
