Driver Killed After He Loses Control, Flips Over, Hits Pole In Oakland

OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- A man in his 20s died early Sunday morning in East Oakland after he somehow lost control of his vehicle, causing it to flip over and strike a light pole.

Around 3:45 a.m., officers responded to the scene of a solo vehicle crash in the 5400 block of International Boulevard, according to police.

Upon arrival, officers located a black Volkswagen Jetta that had flipped over on its roof.

Inside the car, officers and responding firefighters found the driver suffering from major head trauma, police said.

The driver, an Oakland man in his 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police. His name has not been released pending notification of next of kin.

Investigators determined the Jetta was traveling west on International Boulevard when the driver lost control of the vehicle and struck a curb, causing the vehicle to overturn before striking the light pole, police said.

Investigators do not know if alcohol played a factor in the crash, but they suspect speed may have been a factor, according to police.
