Bumgarner Not Up To The Dodger Challenge
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Madison Bumgarner is one of the best pitchers in baseball. Just not this year against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Rob Segedin homered and later left to meet his pregnant wife at the hospital for the birth of his son, and the Dodgers roughed up Bumgarner again to beat the San Francisco Giants 9-5 on Tuesday night.
Bumgarner gave up a season-high five runs and nine hits in five innings while striking out seven.
He's yet to get a win in three starts against the Dodgers this season. San Francisco trails Los Angeles by two games in the NL West.
"I didn't feel like it was too terribly bad, but it seemed like every time I did miss, they put the bat on the ball, found a hole, put it in the gap, whatever," Bumgarner said. "It was just a rough one."
Corey Seager, Justin Turner and Adrian Gonzalez combined for eight hits and four RBIs, and the banged-up Dodgers extended their division lead on the same day they tied a major league record by placing their 27th player on the disabled list.
Segedin and Andrew Toles homered for the second straight game after getting their first big league homers in a 19-8 win over Cincinnati on Monday.
Segedin's wife, Robin, is expected to give birth to the couple's first child, a boy, at any time. Segedin started in right field on Tuesday and batted seventh. In the eighth inning, he was replaced in the outfield, ran to the dugout, got high-fives from his teammates and left for the hospital.
"After we made that double switch, he made a beeline to the hospital," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. "I'm not sure her current status, but she was getting close. He was moving pretty quickly. I don't even know if he showered."
Bumgarner (12-8) is 0-2 with a 5.63 ERA in three starts against the Dodgers this season. Gonzalez hit a two-run single to center with the bases loaded against Bumgarner in the fifth to break a tie.
"I don't get concerned about that with Bum. There's nobody tougher than Bum," Bochy said. "They just did a good job."
Kenley Jansen allowed a homer to Denard Span but still got his 36th save.
Seager, an MVP and Rookie of the Year candidate, extended his hitting streak to 14 games by going 3 for 4 with a walk and three runs scored. Gonzalez extended his hitting streak to 16 games.
The Dodgers and Giants still play eight more times this season, including the last three games of the regular season.
Bumgarner allowed five earned runs and nine hits in five innings. He struck out seven, but the fifth inning was his demise. The Giants bullpen, which has struggled of late, allowed four runs.
Dodgers starter Kenta Maeda (13-7) allowed three runs and six hits in five innings and issued a career-high four walks while striking out four.
With two outs in the fifth, he intentionally walked Brandon Crawford, then struck out Hunter Pence. He yelled and punched his glove before handing off to the bullpen.
The Giants' Angel Pagan extended his hitting streak to 19 games.
TRAINER'S ROOM
Giants: Outfielder Gregor Blanco went on the disabled list with a right shoulder injury. His shoulder has been bothering him since May.
Dodgers: LHPs Brett Anderson (blister on left index finger) and Scott Kazmir (neck, back) both went on the disabled list, pushing the team's season-long total to 27 players on the list. That ties the 2012 Boston Red Sox for the most in a season.
