San Jose Infant Found With Skull Fracture, Broken Bones; Father Arrested

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- A San Jose father has been arrested after his infant daughter was found with a skull fracture and other fractures throughout her body, according to the sheriff's department.

Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office spokesman Sgt. James Jensen said in a press release that 32-year-old Matthew Zabala was arrested Tuesday afternoon, two days after his six-week-old daughter was taken by ambulance to Valley Medical Center in San Jose.

The infant was suffering from cardiac arrest and during the course of treatment it was discovered the child had multiple fractures including skull fracture that appeared non-accidental, Jensen said.

Investigators interviewed both biological parents of the infant at their home on the 50th block of Boston Avenue in unincorporated San Jose, and based upon multiple interviews and evidence, deputies arrested Zabala on felony child abuse and domestic violence charges, Jensen said.

Zabala was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail, with bail set at $500,000.

As of Thursday morning, the infant was listed in critical condition.
