Police Say Speed, Alcohol Factors In Fatal San Leandro Crash

SAN LEANDRO (CBS SF) -- Police are investigating an early morning collision in San Leandro that left one man dead and two others in the hospital.

According to police, officers responded to a single vehicle crash around 2:35 a.m. at Bancroft Middle School, located at 1150 Bancroft Avenue.

A preliminary investigation revealed the car was traveling at a high rate of speed heading east on Callan Avenue.

Police said the vehicle crossed the intersection at Bancroft Avenue and entered the parking lot of the middle school, striking a fence and finally smashing into the exterior wall of the school gymnasium.

According to police, the driver died on impact, and two other passengers were taken to a hospital they were reported in critical, and stable condition.

Police said it appears that both speed and alcohol were factors in the crash and officers will continue to investigate.
