Family Faces Assault Charges In Sausalito Restaurant Ruckus

SAUSALITO (CBS SF) – Members of an East Bay family face prosecution for assault and battery after they allegedly attacked employees of a Sausalito restaurant Saturday evening, Sausalito police said.

The family entered the Fish and Chips of Sausalito restaurant at 817 Bridgeway around 7:50 p.m. and were told they would have to take their food to go because the restaurant was closing, Lt. Bill Fraass said.

Two family members, Mohammad Afzal, 35, of Walnut Creek, and Namath Sahar, 59, of Orinda, became argumentative and began throwing items at employees, Fraass said.

One employee suffered a cut on his face when Afzal allegedly threw a metal holder for ice cream cones at his head, Fraass said.

Sahar allegedly spit in one employee's face and another male family member allegedly pushed an employee and broke a beer tap, according to police.

Witnesses said the family, that also included three females and an infant, left before police arrived. Officers found trash and other items on the ground of the restaurant, police said. The women in the party were not involved in the incident, Fraass said.

Officer Davin Rose located the family at the corner of Bridgeway and Bay Street, police said.

Afzal was arrested and booked in the Marin County Jail for assault with a deadly weapon and vandalism, and police said they will ask prosecutors to file criminal complaint against Sahar for battery.

Police are trying to identify the male who pushed the employee and damaged the beer tap, Fraass said.
