10 Injured As SUV Careens Into Solano College Classroom

FAIRFIELD (CBS SF) – A SUV careened into a portable classroom at Solano Community College where students were taking a math test Friday, injuring 10 people -- seven of whom were transported to the hospital, authorities said.

Cordelia Fire Battalion Chief Allyn Kemp said the driver of the SUV apparently had a seizure and lost control of the vehicle.

The SUV slammed through the wall of a portable classroom at 9:15 a.m. where students were taking a math test. Fortunately, Kemp said that half the students had completed the test and had left the classroom at the time of the crash.

Kemp said one student was freed after being trapped under the SUV. She suffered moderate injuries and was hospitalized for treatment. Eight other students suffered minor injuries.

"We're extremely thankful there were not more serious injuries," Deputy Christine Castillo said.

Castillo said the driver was a male staff member in his late 40s who suffered moderate injuries and was taken to a hospital. Drugs or alcohol are not believed to be factors in the crash.

Photos from the scene show a gaping hole in the outside of a portable classroom and SUV parked inside the building. Desks are strewn about and debris litters the floor.
