Marin County Gun Buyback Event To Be Hosted At 5 Locations Tuesday

NOVATO (CBS SF) -- Residents are being encouraged to exchange their guns for cash during a gun buyback event being held Tuesday at five locations in Marin County.

The program, which is being sponsored by the Marin County District Attorney's Office, will be held from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Novato Police Department at 909 Machin Ave., according to police.

Operable firearms from residents from Marin, San Francisco, Contra Costa and Sonoma counties will be accepted, police said.

Attendees can receive up to $200 in cash for operable semiautomatic handguns or assault rifles and $100 for any other operable firearm.

Up to three firearms per person will be accepted for compensation. In order to verify residency, attendees are asked to bring a valid form of identification or a current utility bill, according to police.

Qualified residents can also turn in inoperable firearms, vintage firearms, firearm clips and magazines, scopes, ammunition and other firearm-related paraphernalia, although these items will not be compensated, police said.

During the event, four additional buyback sites will also be open. The sites will be located at the California Highway Patrol Marin Office at 53 San Clemente Drive in Corte Madera, the Mill Valley Police Department at 1 Hamilton Drive in Mill Valley, the San Rafael Police Department at 1400 Fifth Ave. in San Rafael and the Marin County Sheriff's Office Point Reyes Substation at 101 Fourth St. in Point Reyes.
