Tesla Accuses Oil Exec Of Impersonating Elon Musk In Email

PALO ALTO (CBS SF) – Tesla Motors has reportedly filed a lawsuit against an oil industry executive, claiming he tried to obtain non-public company data by impersonating CEO Elon Musk in an email.

According to Forbes, the automaker claimed the email was sent by Todd Katz of Quest Integrity Group LLC, which provides services to the pipeline, refining, syngas and power industries.

Katz is listed as the Quest Integrity Group’s CFO on their website.

The automaker said in a lawsuit that CFO Jason Wheeler received a suspicious email from “elontesla@yahoo.com,” seeking additional info after the company announced its second quarter earnings on August 3rd.

Katz allegedly wrote in the email:

“why you so cautious w Q3/4 gm guidance on call? also what are your thoughts on disclosing M3 res#? Pros/cons from ir pov? what is your best guess as to where we actually come in on q3/4 deliverables. honest guess? no bs. thx 4 hard work prepping 4 today

Tesla announced the company had a $293 million loss in the second quarter as it delivered fewer vehicles than planned and dealt with troubles with its Autopilot function.

Forbes reported that Wheeler did not reply with the information. The company performed an investigation, saying that Katz set up the email account.

The automaker is seeking reimbursement for the investigation and legal fees, along with unspecified financial compensation.
