USF Women's Basketball Coach Jennifer Azzi Steps Down

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – After coaching the University of San Francisco women's basketball program for six seasons, Jennifer Azzi announced her resignation Thursday.

"I feel that I have accomplished my goal of building a championship caliber program at USF. The program is in fantastic shape with high-level student-athletes from all over the world. I am leaving this program in great shape to be successful for many years to come," Azzi said in a statement.

"We are also expecting the birth of our first child later this year and I am excited for the journey ahead off the court," Azzi went on to say.

The school credited Azzi for transforming the program into a contender, taking the Dons to the West Coast Conference final in 2015.

Last season, the Dons advanced to their first NCAA Tournament in 19 years after winning the West Coast Conference. The Dons ended last season with a 21-12 record.

As a player, Azzi helped lead Stanford to the 1990 NCAA Championship and won gold for Team USA at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. Azzi played several seasons with the WNBA and now-defunct ABL.

The university has not announced a replacement.
