2 SoCal Officers Killed, 1 Wounded After Responding To Domestic Dispute

PALM SPRINGS (CBS SF) -- UPDATE: Suspect Arrested In Fatal Shooting Of 2 Palm Springs Police Officers

A massive manhunt is underway in Southern California for a shooter who opened fire on police.

The gunman shot 3 officers in Palm Springs. Two have died, and the third is still hospitalized.

It all happened around 1 p.m. Saturday in a residential neighborhood in the north part of town.

Frances Serrano said she called police and said her son was "acting crazy." He had threatened to shoot the police if they arrived.

Witnesses reported hearing 10 to 20 shots. They said the gunfire came so fast. It sounded like fireworks at first.

"It was rapid fire. What kind of gun do you think it was? Had to be an automatic. I mean, there's hundreds of shots. Hundreds of shots," said a neighbor.

The officers who lost their lives are Jose Gilbert Vega, a 35-year veteran who was set to retire in December and Lesley Zerebny, a 27-year-old new mother, according to Police Chief Bryan Reyes.

Zerebny just came back to work after giving birth four months ago. Vega was working on an overtime shift and not supposed to be on his normal duty at the time of the shooting.

The third officer shot is alert and helping with investigation, according to the chief.

Reyes told reporters the officers were talking calmly to the man, trying to resolve things when he suddenly opened fire on them.

SWAT teams and dozens of officers were combing the area for the shooter or shooters. People who live nearby are being asked to stay inside. Some neighbors were evacuated.
