(CBS SF) – The lobbying affiliate of the Humane Society of the United States has issued a rare endorsement, backing Democrat Hillary Clinton over Republican Donald Trump, saying a Trump administration would be “a threat to animals everywhere.”
“While Trump has advocates for trophy hunting, puppy mills, factory farming, and horse slaughter on his side, Hillary Clinton has a strong record of taking a stand against many of these issues,” Humane Society Legislative Fund president Michael Markarian said in a blog post last week.
According to The Washington Post, the group also produced an attack ad showing Trump’s sons Eric and Donald Jr. trophy hunting in Africa. The ad also calls out the candidate’s agricultural advisers for opposing animal rights causes.
The Humane Society also criticized Trump for his apparent lack of pet ownership, saying that he would be the first president since Harry Truman to not have a pet in the White House.
Markarian said, “The Clintons seem to have long felt the pull of animals, while the Trumps have not.”
Last month, USA Today took sides in a presidential race for the first time in its history, calling Trump “unfit for the presidency.”
