SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- A San Francisco police officer shot in the head Friday night is conscious but in critical condition, according to a police spokeswoman.

UPDATE: SFPD Officer Shot Near Stern Grove In Critical Condition After Surgery

The update was issued just before 2 a.m. Saturday, three hours after a social media post from San Francisco police listed the officer's injuries as non-life-threatening.

At about 8:15 p.m., officers responded to the Lakeshore Shopping Center after receiving a call about a man causing a disturbance and making threats, police said.

After officers found the man in the first block of Everglade Drive, he fired several shots toward the officers, striking one of them in the head. The suspect then ran toward Sigmund Stern Grove.

The injured officer's partner provided first aid and requested backup, who established a perimeter around Stern Grove Park, police said.

The suspect came out of the bushes at 28th Avenue and Vicente Street and tried to run away. Officers chased and shot the suspect, who then fell to the ground while holding his gun to his chest and refusing to surrender, police said.

Tactical officers utilized flash-bang devices to distract the man, and were then able to arrest him. The suspect was taken to San Francisco General Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

"Our thoughts are with our injured officer and his family," San Francisco Interim Police Chief Toney Chaplin said in a statement.

"Our officers each day put their lives at risk to protect and serve San Francisco, and we are grateful for the outpouring of support we saw Friday evening from San Franciscans who were concerned for the officer's well-being," Chaplin said.

Other city agencies assisting in Friday's incident include the Fire Department, the Department of Public Health, the Department of Emergency Management and the Recreation and Parks Department, in addition to California Highway Patrol and police from Daly City and San Bruno.
