Fremont Man Suspected Of 16 Suspicious Fires Arrested

FREMONT (CBS SF) – After asking for the public's help earlier this month to find a suspected arsonist believed to have set at least 16 fires in Fremont's Warm Springs neighborhood since July, police identified and arrested a suspect Friday in connection with the fires.

Police arrested 30-year-old Fremont resident Corey Minhas on suspicion of arson and booked him into the Fremont Jail, police announced Tuesday.

The most recent arson fire in a series of blazes since mid-July occurred around 1:30 p.m. Thursday near Mayten Way and Warm Springs Boulevard, police said.

While detectives were investigating that fire, they used a K-9 trailing dog and were also able to obtain video surveillance from the area.  Evidence eventually led detectives to Minhas, who lived near where the fires had occurred, according to police.

The majority of the fires were set on Hackamore Lane and Mayten Way, with most occurring on Sunday and Monday mornings between midnight and 5 a.m., police said.

The damage was mainly limited to garbage, small bushes, dumpsters and trees.

Detectives believe Minhas acted alone, according to police.
