Sexual Assault Suspect Cuts His Throat In Court Moments After Guilty Verdict

SANTA ANA (CBS SF/AP) -- A former teacher convicted of sexually assaulting a teenager pulled a razor and slit his throat in a Santa Ana courtroom moments after the verdict.

City News Service says 56-year-old Jeffrey Scott Jones of Huntington Beach was rushed to a hospital Wednesday. His attorney says it appears he'll recover.

He'd been free on bail and authorities will try to determine how he got the razor into court.

Prosecutors said Jones molested and had sex with a teenage relative of his live-in girlfriend in 2012 and 2013.

The defense said the girl made up the story because she was smoking marijuana and trying to hide it.

Jones was convicted of aggravated sexual assault of a child and continuous sexual abuse. He faces up to 66 years to life in prison.

The Los Angeles Times reported that prosecutors said Jones worked as a high school teacher for 27 years.
