NFL Hall of Famer Charles Haley Bares Soul, Offers Life Lessons In KPIX Interview
SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX 5) -- The San Francisco 49ers dominant era of the 1980s and 1990s featured several future Hall of Fame players, including Joe Montana, Ronnie Lott, Steve Young, Jerry Rice, Charles Haley, Bill Walsh and Eddie Debartolo.
Among this prestigious club, all were well-known by the media with the possible exception of Charles Haley who rarely spoke with the media.
During his time with the 49ers, Haley was disliked by many teammates and was often disruptive in the locker room, to the point where the team eventually got fed up and traded him to Dallas. As a Cowboy, Haley continued to find team success while still battling his own personal demons.
It was only after Haley retired from football that it was discovered he suffered from bipolar disorder. Haley came to the KPIX 5 studios for an interview where I learned more about the Hall of Fame linebacker in 25 minutes than I had in his entire career.
He is a man with a complicated past. This interview attempts to understand Charles Haley by looking far beyond the 100.5 sacks and the five Super Bowl rings he amassed during his incredible career.
