Salinas Valley Prisoner Attacked, Killed By 2 Inmates
SOLEDAD (CBS/AP) -- California corrections officials say a central California prison inmate has been killed by two other inmates.
Corrections department spokeswoman Terry Thornton said Monday that the 36-year-old was attacked with an inmate-made weapon Saturday at Salinas Valley State Prison.
He died at a hospital an hour later. She says his name is not being released because relatives have not been notified.
Guards used pepper spray grenades to halt the attack in a maximum-security area of the prison.
Officials say two inmates already serving life sentences are considered suspects.
They say 42-year-old Brant Daniel is serving an attempted murder sentence from Sacramento County, while 57-year-old Leonard Dunning is serving a murder sentence from Los Angeles County.
There are 3,800 inmates at the prison in Soledad, about 130 miles southeast of San Francisco.
