United Flight Bound For Paris Returns To SFO With Mechanical Issue

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- A United Airlines plane that took off from SFO for Paris Monday afternoon was diverted back to San Francisco because of a mechanical issue.

It is United Flight 990, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner. It took off at 3:47 p.m. Monday afternoon.

The flight was over Idaho when the crew determined there was a problem and turned around.

United said there was no emergency, which is why the plane returned to SFO.

There are a total of 230 people on the aircraft with 12 crew members and 218 passengers.

The plane landed safely at about 6:16 p.m.

United said they will have their work crews go over the plane from top to bottom to determine what was wrong with it.
