Police Shootings Put SFPD On High Alert

KCBS_740SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- The San Francisco Police Department is on high alert this week after four officers were shot in three different states over the weekend.

It is standard policy that San Francisco Police officers patrol in pairs, but that can change is someone is out for the day.  But this week supervisors are doing everything they can to make sure no one is alone out there.

"It's unparalleled the amount of attacks that happened on officers specifically. If our officers being targeted, we want to make sure that everyone's safe, and that the officers can come home to their families," SFPD Officer Grace Gatpandan said.

In this weekend's incidents, the majority of the officers were taken by surprise by gunmen. The first was an officer in San Antonio who was just sitting in his patrol car Sunday morning when he was ambushed and shot to death.  Gatpandan says it's SFPD's job to let training overcome fear in each situation.

"Every single officer has to have a cool head out there, but it's always in the back of our minds that any call can go sideways, and that depends a lot on the environment. It depends on the interaction with the individual. So, if an officer contacts you, it's always best to just keep your calm," Gatpandan said.
