70-Year-Old Woman Who Died In Suspicious San Mateo House Fire Identified

SAN MATEO (CBS SF) -- A 70-year-old woman who died early Friday morning in a San Mateo house fire that is being investigated as suspicious has been identified as San Mateo resident Sandra Caron, according to the San Mateo County coroner's office.

Firefighters learned of the fire at 1506 Oak Street after a newspaper carrier reported the fire at around 4:40 a.m., police said.

Upon arrival, firefighters saw smoke coming from the eves of the home. Flames and smoke were also seen coming from the home's attic and roof, according to police.

When firefighters searched the home for residents, they found a woman inside who did not have a pulse and was not breathing. The crew took the woman outside and started CPR, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

While the cause for the fire remains under investigation, police said the origin of the fire appears suspicious.

The same home was the scene of an officer involved shooting back in 2011, in which a man who may have been Caron's son died after confronting officers with a gun.

On Feb. 28, 2011, officers responded to the nearby CVS store at 77 Bovet Road after someone reported a person acting aggressively toward customers, according to police.

The man, later identified as 36-year-old Robert Caron, ran from the area and officers later found him at the Oak Street home.

Police officers attempted to negotiate with Robert while he held a handgun in plain sight, police said.

Robert fired three rounds at officers, who were not injured, before running to the home's backyard. The officer then fired one shot from his AR-15 rifle, striking the man in the chest, according to police.

Robert was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sandra later told police her son was a diagnosed schizophrenic.

She said he had come home in a rage because the pharmacy wanted to charge him for his medication, police said.
