Woman Hit, Killed While Crossing Street In Fremont

FREMONT (CBS SF) -- A 23-year-old woman died Monday night in Fremont's Niles District after a car struck her as she was crossing the street, according to police.

At about 8:05 p.m., officers responded to a report of a collision near Niles Boulevard and Rock Avenue, police said.

After a preliminary investigation, officers determined the victim was crossing westbound Niles Boulevard and was not in the crosswalk.

Around the same time, two vehicles were approaching on westbound Niles Boulevard. The first vehicle noticed the pedestrian and stopped, but the second did not see the pedestrian and struck her, according to police.

The victim was taken to a hospital where she died a short while later, police said. She has been identified as Saitejaswi Chunduri of Fremont, according to the Santa Clara County medical examiner's office.

The driver who struck Chunduri remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. Police do not suspect drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash and are currently not pursuing criminal charges.

The crash remains under investigation and anyone with information about it is asked to contact Fremont police Traffic Officer Anthony Piol at apiol@fremont.gov.
